Common Candle Making Problems and Fixes: A Troubleshooting Guide
Most candle-making problems come down to temperature, wick sizing, or fragrance load — and nearly all of them are fixable once you know the cause. Frosting, sinkholes, wet spots, weak scent, and rough tops are the usual suspects, and none of them mean you can't make a great candle. Here's a troubleshooting guide to diagnose what went wrong and fix it on the next pour.

Frosting
What it is: A white, crystalline, frost-like coating on the surface or sides of the candle, most common with soy and other natural waxes.
Why it happens: Frosting is a natural property of soy wax — it's the wax crystallizing. Rapid cooling and temperature swings make it more visible. It does not affect how the candle burns or smells.
How to reduce it: Pour at a cooler temperature, pre-warm your containers, cool candles slowly at a stable room temperature away from drafts, and store them somewhere temperature-stable. Some makers accept a little frosting as part of soy's natural charm — it's cosmetic only.
Sinkholes
What it is: Air pockets or cavities that form inside or just under the surface as the candle cools, sometimes hidden until you poke the top.
Why it happens: As wax cools it contracts, and if the outside sets before the inside, a cavity forms — often around the wick.
How to fix it: Pour a little cooler and more slowly so the candle sets more evenly. Save some leftover wax and do a second "top-off" pour once the first has set to fill any sinkhole. Poking relief holes around the wick before a top-off pour helps release trapped air. Cooling more slowly also helps.
Wet Spots
What it is: Cloudy patches or "bubbles" where the wax has pulled away from the glass, making it look like water is trapped against the container. Purely visual.
Why it happens: The wax didn't adhere fully to the glass, usually because the container was too cool when you poured or the candle cooled too quickly, causing the wax to shrink away.
How to reduce it: Warm your containers before pouring (near the double boiler or with a heat gun), pour at the recommended temperature, and let candles cool slowly and undisturbed. Wet spots are notoriously hard to eliminate completely with natural waxes — they're cosmetic and don't affect performance.
Poor Scent Throw
What it is: The candle smells weak, either unlit (cold throw) or when burning (hot throw).
Why it happens: Several possible causes — too little fragrance, fragrance not properly bound to the wax, not enough cure time, or a wick too small to create a full melt pool.
How to fix it:
- Increase your fragrance to your wax's maximum recommended load (but not beyond it).
- Add fragrance at the right temperature and stir a full two minutes so it binds.
- Cure the candle — 1 to 2 weeks for soy — before judging the scent.
- Make sure your wick is large enough to melt the wax edge to edge; no melt pool means no hot throw.
Rough or Bumpy Tops
What it is: An uneven, lumpy, or dull surface instead of a smooth top, especially with soy.
Why it happens: Pouring too cool, cooling too fast, or drafts during setting.
How to fix it: Pour a bit warmer, cool candles slowly at a stable temperature, and keep them away from drafts. For an easy cosmetic fix, gently melt the top smooth with a heat gun after the candle has fully set.
Sweating (Oil Beading on Top)
What it is: Small droplets of fragrance oil pooling on the candle's surface.
Why it happens: The fragrance load exceeds what the wax can hold, or the candle is stored somewhere too warm.
How to fix it: Reduce your fragrance percentage to within your wax's limit and store candles in a cool spot. This one is worth fixing beyond looks — excess surface oil is a fire hazard.
Cracking
What it is: Cracks across the surface, common in paraffin and some blends.
Why it happens: The candle cooled too quickly.
How to fix it: Pour at a slightly cooler temperature and let candles cool slowly and gradually at room temperature. Avoid putting freshly poured candles in the fridge or a cold room to speed things up — fast cooling causes more problems than it solves.
The Big Picture: Change One Thing at a Time
Notice how often the same fixes appear — pour cooler or warmer, cool slowly, warm your containers, get the wick and fragrance load right, and cure. When you hit a problem, change only one variable per batch so you can tell what actually helped. Keep a log of wax, wick, fragrance percentage, and pour and cooling temperatures for every batch.
Most "ruined" candles are just cosmetic issues that don't affect the burn at all, and the rest usually trace back to temperature or wicking. A few methodical batches will iron out almost everything.
