Candle Fragrance Load Guide: How Much Fragrance Oil to Use

Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil relative to your wax by weight, and most candles land somewhere between 6% and 10%. More isn't better — every wax has a maximum it can hold, and overloading causes seeping, poor burns, and weaker throw, not stronger scent. Getting the load right and then curing the candle is what actually produces a room-filling smell. Here's how it works.

What "Fragrance Load" Means

Fragrance load (also called fragrance percentage or scent load) is calculated by weight:

Fragrance load % = (weight of fragrance oil ÷ weight of wax) × 100

So if you use 1 ounce of fragrance oil per 10 ounces of wax, that's a 10% fragrance load. Candle makers always work by weight, not volume, because oils and wax have different densities.

How Much to Use

A safe, effective range for most container candles is 6% to 10%. Here's a rough guide:

6–8% Solid, balanced scent for most candles
8–10% Strong throw; near many waxes' max
Over 10% Usually exceeds what wax can hold — problems

The single most important number, though, is your wax's maximum fragrance load. Every wax has a limit to how much oil it can absorb and hold, published on the supplier's data sheet. Never exceed it. Some soy waxes max out around 10%, while some blends hold a bit more — check yours.

Why More Isn't Better

It's tempting to think dumping in extra fragrance means a stronger candle. It doesn't. Wax can only bind so much oil. Beyond that point:

  • The oil seeps out, leaving greasy spots on top or pooling at the bottom — a fire hazard as well as a mess.
  • The burn suffers. Excess oil can clog the wick, cause sputtering, drown the flame, or make the candle burn poorly.
  • The throw can actually drop. Unbound oil doesn't vaporize and disperse the way properly bound fragrance does.
  • It wastes money, since fragrance oil is one of your priciest ingredients.

The sweet spot is the most oil your wax can fully absorb — not more.

How to Calculate Your Fragrance

Work backward from your wax weight. Say you're making candles that use 20 ounces of wax total and you want an 8% load:

  1. Multiply wax weight by your target percentage: 20 oz × 0.08 = 1.6 oz of fragrance oil.
  2. That means you'll melt 18.4 oz of wax and add 1.6 oz of fragrance (so the finished total is 20 oz).

A common simpler shortcut is to base the percentage on wax weight alone (20 oz wax + 1.6 oz fragrance). Either approach is fine as long as you're consistent and stay within your wax's limit. Always weigh the fragrance on a scale rather than eyeballing it.

Add Fragrance at the Right Temperature

Getting the load right only helps if the oil actually binds to the wax. Two things make that happen:

  • Temperature: Add fragrance at the temperature your wax and oil recommend (for soy, often around 180–185°F), then stir gently but thoroughly for a full two minutes. This lets the oil disperse and bond evenly. Rushing the stir is a top cause of weak scent.
  • Not too hot: Adding fragrance to wax that's too hot can burn off some of the scent.

Curing: The Step That Makes Scent Throw

Curing is letting the finished, cooled candle rest before its first burn so the fragrance and wax fully bind and mature. It's the most overlooked step, and it makes a big difference to cold throw (the unlit smell) and hot throw (the smell when burning).

  • Soy and natural waxes: cure 1 to 2 weeks for the best throw.
  • Paraffin: cures faster, often a few days.
  • Blends: somewhere in between — check your supplier's guidance.

Store curing candles with the lids on, in a cool, dark, dry place. A candle that smells weak right after pouring will often smell dramatically better after a proper cure — so don't judge (or sell) a candle before it's had time.

Troubleshooting Scent Problems

If your candles smell weak:

  • Confirm you hit your target percentage by weight, not volume.
  • Make sure you're at (or near) your wax's maximum, but not over it.
  • Check that you added fragrance at the right temperature and stirred a full two minutes.
  • Give it more cure time before deciding.
  • Consider whether the wick is large enough to create a full melt pool — no melt pool, no hot throw.

If your candles seep oil or burn poorly, you're likely over your wax's limit — dial the percentage back.

Keep a Simple Log

Record your wax, fragrance, exact percentage, add temperature, and cure time for every batch, along with how it burned and threw. After a few batches you'll know the perfect load for your favorite wax-and-scent combinations and won't have to guess.
